Evaluation: Question 3) What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

Gaining audience feedback was to ensure we were using the right conventions to appeal to our target audience and we did a range of things in order to achieve this. One thing that  I had to do to get feedback  is find out about the ‘House’ genre; seeing the ages it would appeal to, the occupation of my audience , the ethnicity of the audience and any other interests and hobbies that they had in order for us to exploit and use in our music video. From my research, I found out the following:

The demographics of my target audience are:
  • Age : 14 – 40
  • Gender: Both
  • Ethnicity Diverse
  • Occupation E to C2

Hobbies and interests: Partying, dancing, relationships and an Urban culture of hipster interests like art and photography.

As a group we were not too sure what genre to do a video for as we had many ideas, so we created two possible questionnaires, one for the ‘Pop’ genre and the other for the ‘house’ genre which I created as this would most probably be the genre we thought we would go for.

I had to find what the audience would like to see in a ‘House’ music video and what would be conventional to this genre. To do this effectively, I created a questionnaire to see the perspective of the targeted audience. We handed out the questionnaire to people that we thought would fit our target audience in order to get quick, valuable feedback.

Some of the key questions I asked to get feedback were:

Why does house music appeal to you?
………………………………………………………………
……………………………………………………………..

How do you want the video to make you feel? (Please Circle)
Happy                   Relaxed               Excited

What do you think is conventional to the house genre?
…………………………………………………
…………………………………………………

What do you feel is a suitable location for a house music video? (Please Circle)
Club                  bar                    House                 Streets

Why does house music appeal to you?
Concept                        Narrative              Performance

The feedback that I got was very useful in the process of planning and making my music video.  The reason being is because it gave me ways to find out how to attract a wider audience, also addressing the audiences’ needs through the music video.

The importance to receiving critical feedback is that I could portray the conventions, values and ideologies through the music video, that were highlighted from the audience. I created graphs from the feedback as they are an easier way to visualize the results when making decisions about the music video.

I learnt a few things from my audience feedback in order to ensure that I was using these in my video production. Some of these things were:
  • ·         Keeping the audience entertained throughout a music video
  • ·         The narrative needs to be clear for the audience to pick up on
  • ·         Clear to identify the artist

Overall, the primary research here was very valuable to the process of planning my music video as it helped with the storyboarding of ideas.

Post-production feedback:
After creating my product, we decided that we would need to share it on various media platforms to get more feedback from our target audience to find out whether we had done a good job or not. This feedback was very important as it provided me with an understanding of the success of our video and our use of conventions to visualize the ‘House’ genre.

YouTube:
The reason why I put my music video on YouTube is because YouTube is an international and a popular source, in fact the biggest video sharing network in the world. Here I was able to show my video to an international audience and I could invite people to watch the video by giving them the link that they could watch it on. I got various people to watch it and give the group some feedback

The positive feedback that I got is

  • This is sick! Everyone watch

  • Really good video

What I learnt from the audience’s feedback is that the audience understood the narrative and enjoyed the music video. Another thing what I can see is that my music video is conventional to the` ‘House’ genre and also has a conventional theme of dancing and urban culture to the ‘House’ genre by using the characters and locations.

Facebook
What I also did to get more audience feedback is post my music video on another popular social websites, Facebook. I did this so I could get more people to watch my video and as it was people I knew, I wanted to know what they thought of my production. On Facebook, I made the video ‘Public’ so more people could watch it as a lot of my friends like and are knowledgeable of the ‘House’ genre.

The comments on Facebook that I got were:

  • It is very good
  •  you done really good i like the visuals effects thats used in is video

What I learnt from this is that I could have portrayed the narrative better and probably shown more of the narrative of the boys growing up to make it more clearer to the audience

Focus group

I held a focus group to receive the last bit of feedback from my target audience on my music video production. I invited friends from the Sixth form and year 11 students as they fit my target audience and they were people that I knew liked the ‘House’ genre.

Conclusion
I used a range of media products to promote my music video and get valuable audience feedback. The reason being is that it could help me determine if my music video was conventional and also met the expectations of the audience. The feedback on the whole was good, but there is always room for improvement. As the producer of this music video, I feel it is beneficial to me as I could analyse my own performance and the aspects of my music video that target audience did or did not like. When looking back at my music video, I understood where Nicholas Taitt was coming from about the locations of my music video and the narrative. The feedback I received  about my music video has helped me  review my work and make progress and if I could  create this music video again, I would plan out the elements with more detail to create a successful professional music video  for the audience to enjoy.

Research and Planning Adverts: Genric conventions and analying magazine adverts

A magazine advert is a form of print which is distributed to the audience in order to sell their product, in this case a single or an album. The impact that a magazine advert has is it can attract a wider  audience than just the intended  based audience which  can help the sales of the artists singles.

Definition:
a magazine is a form of print
Purpose:
The purpose of a magazine advert is to promote the artist and their single or album

Impact:
The impact that this will have have is  will have is attracting a wider audience
Conventions:
  • Main image
  • Tiltle of album
  • The artist
  • Avalible at itunes or hmv
The features to identify within a magazine advert:

The key features in a magazine advert is star motifs, this is something we can relate back to dyers theory because the star motifs is an image which you can portray for the fan based audience   to the audience through the uses of the magazine advert. Another couple  key features which is shown in a magazine advert is the colours, typography and layout. The colours layout and  typography are put in a particular way to attract the  audience and other members of the public, also making sure it fits that it fits the genre of music, for instants  magazine covers would have the image and colours stand out more than the typography, because its more eye catching to the audience.

Research and Planning : Digipak: Drafts For Digipak

This is our drafts  for the digipak and what we was looking to use this is important to do so we can see which design has looks more conventional to the house genre  these are the drafts what we have

My Digipak

                                                                                                                                                          Jemar Digipak

Dwayne's Digipak

What we dedicated is my draft would be the best to use as final the  product, because mine was the most effective and  conventional to the `House`genre also complimented the artist.

The Drafts

Draft 1:

Advantages
  • Graphics suit the house genre.
  • Artist is clear and identifiable.
  • Visually appealing

Disadvantages
  • Text needs to be clearer
  • Typography needs to be consistent with advert
  • More information about artist and production company
  • Need to create the slide that includes the CD

Draft 2:
Advantages
  • Images of artist create star appeal
  • Design on CD is very urban and reflects Target audience well
  • Colour compliment advert better
Disadvantage
  • Information on book needs to be included
  • Artist name on album
  • Simple layout, needs to be a bit more visual and stand put more
the draft that we have going to use is the second one the reason why is because this one would be more conventional to the genre and all the members of the group like the idea, so what we will do is work with this

Research and Planning Advert: Draft for Adverts

The drafting process was important because...

Draft 1:

This is the firstt draft that me and my group have came up with. What we have looked deeply into is the colour scheme  as you can see from our draft,is we went with a black and white theme to stnd out to the audience.
The positve criticism:

Areas to improve:
the disadvantages of this is that the audience wouldn't be able to see the typography in this advert , that much because it isn't that clear, all so the artist of the name is not very clear which we would need to work on
Draft 2
The second draft what me and my group have came up is similar but a different picture and we have more information about the artist and we have made it more clear to the audience
The Position Criticisms:
  • Image creates a star appeal
  • Typography is more clearer

Areas of improve :
  • The colour scheme compliments this genre
  • The layout need to be better
  •
