Detailed below is a storyboard template that my group and I intend to follow. This is crucial because we want to follow a structured plan, ensuring that we know what is happening for single every shot, awareness of each location and also the duration of the different shots. I feel this task is hugely beneficial to complete before hand to enusre that all memebers of the filming crew know exactly what they're doing and filming is well organised.

Planning: Artist Start Image
It is important that our artists start image is conventional to the genre and also looks integral to the music video. This is because our main aim to follow the conventions of the house genre. We also want to ensure that we are promoting the artist, portraying his ideologies and values to the audience( not only thought the music video but also through the artist image).
The theorists that I intend to apply to my music video and portray a star image, will be is going to be Goodwin and Dyers. I want our music video to attract a wider range of audiences and feel this will be achievable through their costume, facial expressions and body language. The star motifs and artists image will also e key to the music videos success.
The clothing that I feel will most accurately represent my character and would relate to the house genre will be as follows.

I feel these clothing choices will relate to the single because my artist looks care free. I feel that he can portray his ideologies through wearing this costume and can also be eye catching to the audience due to its simplicity and perhaps encourage the audience to want to know more about this artist by researching them independently. The artist wearing simple clothing would be very conventional to the house genre because this creates an urban trend , aiming for simplicty yet being individual.
Other artist that have similar clothing :
Disclosure
Example
Rudemental

The artist will wear a black jacket with a plain white t shirt. This is becauuse we want to show the audience that our artist is care free and is not really a rebel to society. However, we want to create the impression that our artist is independent and quite narcisstic.

Planning Audience
The audience my group and I intend to target is those between the age ranges of 13- 26. This is because the house genre is a niche genre, however this still appeals to a wide audience.
Age 14 - 50
,Male and Female
Audience category : C2 below
Income: 15 million
Hobbies and Interest : Party's, sports

Planning :Outline Narrative
My group and I have highlighted thelfollowing sections of the lyrics, to create awareness of the performance sections, with the artist singing. Also to show us what part the dancers will be needed. This will ensure that the audience are not confused as a result of the different storylines.
We have split the song into sections and colour coded what parts are for the narrative and the performance of the artist. Our aim for the artist is to use him in different shots and clothing, singing the song whilst portraying his values and ideologies. The themes that we are going to use include love.
Performance: Green
Narrative: Yellow

Intro
I knew just what I had to be
When I heard you say what you said to me
To every dude in sight
Look like you working up an appetite for the night, check it
By then I just sat at the back
Peeping you out, the way you act
It was drinking time, getting out of line
And I'm taking you back at your place
All is well and all is cool
Stay in your place, don't be no fool
We'll get along alright
You look like the type that would try to fight
Best off being a friend to me
You don't want to offend me
Better play it cool, don't know what I might do
[x4]

Planning : Characters
It is important to plan the characters every more for our music video. The reason being is to ensure that the audience can follow the narrative. Dyers theory is going to be shown through the younger characters.

Dyers theory is going to be use through are characters so they can applied to the audience by the type of costumes that the older generation are going to be wearing. This is going to be shown through the use of cinematography applied on specific parts of the clothing. For example the trainers that the characters are going to wear in different dance routines.
Goodwins theory is going to be used to show the representation of the main characters and how they have grown of the years and shown their different ability through dance. This is going to be shown though the use of shots such as close ups and medium shots.
The costumes that the old characters are going to wear will be causal because we aim to show that the older characters are care free, and showing that they're original.

The themes that the characters are going to be portray in the music video are going to be dance, battle, competition, and free of life.

Planning : Locations
White wall
The locations are relevant to the lyrical content because it is crucial for the audience to establish
through the research that I've conducted that the house genre uses basic locations. . This can relate to the audience because they can identify the artist and portray the values and ideologies. The music video that have influenced my group include Aluna George and John Legend
Advantages
Problems that we face include finding a plain white room which we can do create our camera movements and panning shots.
My group and I are going to use urban locations so we can show the conventions of the genre and because we have a catchy song with a beat.
Urban location
This location that we are going to use is going to be used for the dancing and the teams battling each other. I feel this would be effective because it fits with the narrative and it is also conventional to the house genre
If we do find the right location this will be advantageous as it will blend perfectly with the song.
Disadvantages of finding an urban location could be problems with travel into central london and finding the time to get down the this area also making sure that it is free.

Planning:Initial Ideas
Artist :Disclosure
Song title :White Noise
Genre : House
Video content : a man taking a walk to work and sight seeing, taking a walk to different gritty urban locations showing long shots, establishing shots and medium shots The shts clearly identify the positining and location of characters. Also dancing, having fun and listen to his music ( whilst doing his job.)

Video content : a man taking a walk to work and sight seeing, taking a walk to different gritty urban locations showing long shots, establishing shots and medium shots The shts clearly identify the positining and location of characters. Also dancing, having fun and listen to his music ( whilst doing his job.)
Advantages
- characters/ dancers
- easy narration to follow
Disadvantages
- finding similar locations
- the artist is not scene in the music video ( concept/ performance narrative)
Artist: Don Omar
Song title: Danzo
Kuduro
Genre: Dance/Reggae
Video
structure: performance and narrative based.
Video
content: Video firstly begins with the main character in bed waking up
to his alarm clock. Due to the exploitation of the camera and its many angles,
he will then be viewed with women either side to him. This then allows him to
gain an almost immediate representation of a pimp. The song on a whole is quite repetitive which
made me plan to use a series of moving images with different locations and
scenarios in order to accompany the lyrics and also to provide visual
entertainment to the target audience.
Advantages
·
Creates a great atmosphere (Music video)
·
Catchy – able to appeal to most
Disadvantage
·
Spanish rather than English
·
Finding suitable location
·
Song is fast and may be hard to lip sync
Artist: Groover Armada
Song title: Madder
Genre: Electronic Music
Video structure: performance and narrative based.
Video content: Party animal on his typical day out. Starts off with character in his bed. Wakes up to his alarm clock with two women either side of him. The first verse becomes very descriptive so in theory we would fool the lyrics E.g. ‘read the bread while I toast my pay check’,’ start jogging when I hit the pavement’, and ‘cops say stop cause I aren’t Caucasian’. Chorus is very repetitive so we would have a series of moving images with different locations and scenarios for example scene we could have him staggering from being drunk and another scene we could have him running from the police.
Advantages
· The verse is very descriptive so it would be quite easy to get ideas on what to film
· The genre is very unique and would look very professional if pulled off
Disadvantage
· The song is very long at 5 minutes and 22 seconds so we would have to edit the song which means more work
· The song is quite fast so it would be hard to lip sync

Planning: Lighting and colour for music video
Lighting is important to use in a music videos because it helps Identify the artist and the
characters in the music videos, and it can help set the mood to specific locations. What this can do is
create a certain response with the audiences, for example high key lighting
makes the audience feel delighted,
happy, and joyful.
In my music video I tend to use low key light when we our we are using close
ups of the artist, so he can be the centre of attention, letting the audience have a relationship with
the artist can see what the artist is doing
throughout the music video.
In Donae`o `s music video featuring Terri Walker, we can see
that these artist are the centre of attention throughout the music video and we
can see how much impact the high key lighting has with the artists. The artists are seen
towards the audience is smart, cool, causal, artists through the use of the spotlights highlighting the artists faces
showing the audience the feelings through the music video.

Planning: Production roles
The roles of my team:
Prepare and then supervise the making of a music video before presenting the product to a financing entity or a film distributor. We have given this role to Jemar because he is good with finalising the music videos and he has had expirence in the pass with this.
Is someone who get the lighting tougher showing the artist in the spotlight making sure they are the centre of attention. This has been given to Jemar because he understands what is expected of this music video so that why we have given the role to him.
Costume, hair and make-up:
The person that handles the costume, hair and make up is someone who needs to present the artist in a certain way. By doing this they need to find the costume which suits the artist and making sure thier hair and make up is up to standard. This has been given to me.
Camera Operator is usually called the cinematographer. This person is responsible for physically operating the cameras and maintaining the same position for the duration of the shots and camera angles throughout filming. This role is given to Jemar because in our foundation portfolio, Jemar had this role therefor he has already established these skills and can continue to improve them. He also is the best camera person in our group.
Sound technician is someone who takes charge of the music in the production. What me and my group have done is we decided to all help out in the with the sound, taking it in turns and making the sondtrack fit the moving footage.
Editor is someone that works with the raw footage combining them in sequences to making a finished motion picture. Furthermore, they also make cuts that do not confuse the audience and making the music video effective . This role has been asigned to me because had this role in my portfolio from last year. In taking the same role Iwould like to improve on my skill making them more effective.
producer:Prepare and then supervise the making of a music video before presenting the product to a financing entity or a film distributor. We have given this role to Jemar because he is good with finalising the music videos and he has had expirence in the pass with this.
Director is someone that has control of everything making sure the artist is presented in a certain way following Dyer`s theory. The person that has this role is Dwayne because he can work with veryone in the group and he came up with the idea so i feel it's best to put him in charge.
Location manager is someone who finds a perfect location for the music video. This has been asigned to me the reason being is because I know locations which fit the genre of music which we are doing and which can be very effective.
lighting Manger Is someone who get the lighting tougher showing the artist in the spotlight making sure they are the centre of attention. This has been given to Jemar because he understands what is expected of this music video so that why we have given the role to him.

Storyboard Organiser is someone who puts images in a sequence so the whole technical crew can have the same vision as the director also stating the number of shots the editing and sound and putting the narrative right the way through. This role goes to because since he had the idea which my group went along with i feel he should put his idea on paper for the whole group to se the same vision.
Everyone in my group has a job and we all have are strengths and weakness and what I`ve done is give everyone a job in the field that they are comfortable.

Planing : Cinematography and editing my music video
Cinematography is important for any music video because it helps to create a relationship between the audience and the artist depending on how it is used. I believe it is important to think about the cinematography especially in the music videos because we want audiences to react to the music video in a certain way. For instance, with our music video,we are going to use establishing shots, to show the urban look of our locations that we are going to use. We also intend to use close ups, medium and long shots which can relate to dyers theory.
The cinematography that I plan to use in my music video consits of the following:
Editing is important in music video because it helps create a smooth understanding of the video to the audience. I believe it is important to think about the editing, especially in the music videos because we want audience to react to the music video in a certain way. I think the editing would help do this because our music video beats our very fast so our edits are going to be fast to fit the past of the soundtrack. This can relate Goodwin’s theory, because of the music and visual will have a relationship in our music video
The editing I plan to use in my music video consist of the following:
The cinematography that I plan to use in my music video consits of the following:
- Close ups will be used whilst the artsit is singing the song. I have choosen to use this because I want audiences to idenify the artist in the music video. This is conventional to the hosue genre because the artist will protray their artistic view thorough the music video.
- Long shots are going to be used in the music video whilst the dances are going to be dancing infront of a graffti wall. The intention is to show the narration of the charcters. I have chosen this because it connects with the narration that we plan on using in our music video and furtermore, to show the gritty locations. This is conventional to the hosue genre because house orginates from the UK and we can give it that urban dirty gritty look.
- Zooming and panning are going to be shown in the beginging of our music video. This will show the skater and the locations that we will be using. I have choosen this to create a larger impact particualrly for the introduction of our music video, given the nature of how our song begins. This is conventional to the hosue genre because it gives an abstract look to our music video.
- Establishing shots are going to be using in the introduction. I have chosen this because we can get take some great shots of London. This is conventional because it will create a give are dirty look which are video requires.
-
Close ups are going to be used during the middle of the music video to show the dancers such as the feet doing hard dance moves. This will be used because our music video is mainly about dance and this will show off some of the moves that we our choreographing.
Wipe cuts are going to be used to show the change of the characters
from being young to when they are older. We plan on using this because this suits the narration of the music video. This
is conventional to the house genre
because it is specific and detailed editing which is used to show off the music and dancing.
Jump cuts will be use throughout the music video as there are so many beats in the song. We intend to
use this to our advantage such as showing the artist in different areas of
the stairwell, represent him as a cool artist.
Fast paced editing will be used throughout my music video. This will support Goodwins theory that the editing should reflect the pace of the song. There are so many fast beats in the music video which means that I need to make sure the editng is also fast, to suit music video conventions and represent the house genre.

Analysing existing music videos from
similar genres is a benefical process because we can see how the artist and the characters are

Disclosures music video "white noise "is a another excellent example for our group to analyse. Disclosure are a band that creates house music. As we are looking to adopt the house genre, this is a good example to study. There will most likely be features involved that we would want to
include in our music video. I am particularly interested in their use of jump
cuts, location and the use of low level lighting.
·
The is no actual representation of the artist
and the video focuses on the character.
Locations
·
Location of an abandoned building is a great
area as we feel it is conventional to use an area similar to this to stage the
dance battle in our video.
·
The background of the character walking pass a
wall full of graffiti is another good piece of location because it shows that
urban surroundings that we plan to use. We also intend to show
various dancers dancing to the same graffiti background.
Costume
·
The characters costume do not have any real
relevance to our ideas for our music video.
Iconography
·
The torches the character has whist he is dancing
is a great touch, especially in the low level lit area of the abandoned
area we plan to use.
Lighting
·
Low level lighting in the abandoned building is
the main one we plan to use as it can illustrate a great effect along with the
characters holding the lit torches.
·
Natural lighting is also another use of lighting
we also plan to use in our music video.
Editing
·
The main use of editing we took from this video
are the jump cuts. The artist uses these nearer the beginning of the video because we
felt the subtle movement would really go well with our concept with the dancers
.
This video has helped us develop ideas for our own
production because it use conventions of house music that have the potential to
make a great video and that some of their ideas we can incorporate to create a
great video.
