Research: Sub Cultures

Sub cultures is groups of people who share similar values, tastes, and who don’t follow the mainstream culture, a lot of subcultures are mainly based on stereotypes, for example bikers are tend to be very aggressive.

Couple Sub Cultures:

·                     Rockers listen to rock music

·                      skin head  what they listen to is old reggae

·                     bikers listen to heavy metal

·                     Homosexuals
·                     Punks

Punks tend to listen to heavy metal, and  dye their hair bright colours or just plain black and get a lot of facial piercings, their costume is very different from the mainstream lifestyle  the reason being is because they’re rebellious which could relate to their genre of music that punks listen to  the music that they listen to influences their dress sense that’s why they tend to wear very tight clothing which don’t match and big shoes.

The subcultures that I have named are known to oblivious to the mainstream industry  the reason being is because
·         Conformity  -They`re against the common values, of the popular culture and the systems
·         Capitalism  -The group do not follow capitalism, the subcultures like to go by their own rules
·         Tribal/Gang - Don’t like mixing with another  race certain groups would  be stereotypical views about another group for example the skin heads dislike anyone that is not the same colour as them .
·         New ideas – the subcultures have their own belifs, they live the way  they want to live followers of subcultures don’t take upon neophyte ideas.
·         Music Interests – Niche genres depending on the sub culture

Grant Mcracken said The postmodern world is full of diversity dynamism and creativity. If we look at the array of values and ideologies then we cant say all sub cultures come from one culture.

What McCracken is saying is everyone is different  and if we a variety  of people we cant say everyone comes from the culture

  •   Hebdige argued that subcultures bring together like-minded individuals who feel neglected by societal standards and allow them to develop a sense of identity.and Consuming music differs from person to person.

The way that we consume popular artists is very different for example the way we see Nikki manj is different. Nikki Manj appeals a lot to them mainstream culture men and women some men would see her in a different way but her songs are very good.

Stars build up their fan based through x factor , then from x factor  the judges see if you a big seller in the music industry, for example James Arthur is a big seller in the music industry and he has also  built his own target audience from being on x factor.

After looking at the various type of sub cultures I feel my music video would be a sub culture the reason why is because it only a various amount people are a fan  of house music house music, and the target audience is going to be towards people in their early twenty’s.

  1. Trey, some really good analysis her into subcultures and how they are evident in today's music industry. You draw upon good theory and examples to support your work.
    To improve;
-Rethink your discussion on X Factor. X factor is an example of a show that tries to appeal to a wide range of tastes, not always mainstream which is showing how sub-cultures are being made more aware of within the music industry.
-When you discuss Hebdidge, go into his theory a bit more. What did he say about how audiences read into cultural products? Was this the same for everyone? Are audiences active or passive?
-state whether you believe sub-culture bands/artists still have some sort of 'Star image' if people are choosing to dress like them...
