Research:History of Music Videos

Music videos has changed over the years with the help of technology now, modern day music videos are mainly used for promotions or to target a larger audience.
The Historical Timeline

1929 – Bessie Smith,
Bessie Smith was the first ever person to be on a moving image singing, Saint Louis blues. with bessie smiths moving image it was released from a film and the technology back there wasnt  as advaned as what we have so their was basic shots being used in this moving image

1940 – Disney
In the 1940s Disney made an animated film which was based around classical instruments to the visuals, this film star everyone’s favorite character Mikey mouse

1950: music videos was used
In 1956 Tony bennet was filmed walking through Hyde Park, singing stager in paradise, from this happen Bennet claimed that he made the first music video.

, 1964 – The Beatles,
In 1964 the Beatles influenced a vast number of contempary musicians

·          1966-1968 – The Monkees made film segment used to an end of TV series they would perform live on their TV show after every episode.

·          1966, TOTP

In the 1966s Top of the pops was created the important s for this music channel being made was to promote artist singles which had to be completive, most of the music videos was performance based. If you music video got shown on top of the pops then you have intently blown the reason being is because of the level of competition every artist wanted to put out s single.

·        1967 – The Beatles using the video for better purposes,
In the 1967 what the Beatles did was created an effective music video from using techniques which are likely to be seen in a film.
· 1970-1980 – how videos generally developed,

In the 1970s -1980s videos recorders was portable, quicker, and also cheaper, than using filming software. Then in the 80s artist started being more creative with the editing software for example the Jacksons used green screen for their music video.

  1975 – Queen,
Queen made a modern music video created to place TV performances, after these music videos the Beatles created promos saying that queen was the first to create a music video


  1981 – MTV,

In 1981 MTV was lunched and the first video to get aired was     Buggles – Video Killed Radio,  In the 1980 music videos became more sophisticated, about the storyline  thy would want to put in their music videos ( concept, Narrative ,Performance).

    1984 – Thriller,
In the 1984 the film thriller was lunched  the ,,music video thriller had a start middle and end , and the actual music video is 13 minutes long before they had to censor the music video to 4 minutes  and from Michael Jackson produces this music video music videos had a  level ,
What also happen in this year Duran Duran made a music video called Girl on film which had to get censored on top of the pops.

1980’s –MTV and video development.
 There has been a big impact on music videos  over the years this is seen not only from the quality of the cameras but also having more fluent  and effective editing  and now with the image and wealth of the artist they have the money to make  this happen in music videos.

What we can see over the years is how music videos, have change the meaning for them what’s the purpose of them, and also the technology has changed  for example having  more visuals from a green screen and also the different effects  artist can have in music videos as well. for exmple ed sheron  in one of his music videos look how different they editing and the cinematography has change  also  we can speak about the lighting as  well from this music video 



It’s important to know about the history of music videos so we can have a more understanding of the beginning  and how it started , and also we can see what we can see the  impact music videos has had over the years .

    To improve;
    -in your introduction, comment on how music videos have changed over time. Technology and purpose etc.
    -Where you discuss Bessie Smith, analyse the music video a little
