Research: Censorship

Censorship is an act of changing or cutting certain this in a music video, which are to explicit, to be herd or shown on music channels, a some music videos are banned because of the inappropriate   stuff which has been seen on the some music videos, MTV is a successful company which has to protect the audience from any explicit lyrics and visuals, for example Snoop Dogg`s music video called Wet had to be changed to Wet because it was inappropriate to the audience.

The difference between explicit Content and explicit lyrics

Explicit content  tend to show numerous of things which have to get banned or cut  before showing  TV, the following content which cannot be shown on the TV is things such  sex violence and drugs which are show to relate back to the lyric in certain music videos for example Duran Duran -  Girls On Film

Duran Duran, "Girls on Film" (1981) A series of erotic vignettes, including suggestive pole dancing, pillow fights, sumo wrestling and one very oily massage, was more than enough to get Duran Duran's breakthrough hit banned by the BBC,

In this video by The Prodigy we can see that he is being violent towards women, and taking his anger out on them but we can also see a lot of extreme content of him going out  to a strip club and having to much to drink and in a result to this the violence starts happening this is shown when the jump cuts get more faster in this music video.

M.I.A Born Free One young male gets shot in the head and another blown to pieces in this shocking 2010 video depicting redhead genocide. The violence along with some nudity in the beginning of the song

Explicit lyrics is similar to content but the different is the lyrics used in a music, and if they want that certain song played on the TV then it would either have to get blurred out or the lyrics would have to change so it can be appropriate to play on some times if the song doesn't get censored then what happens is the song would have to be played after hours. for example Eamon F**k it  this song had a lot of  bad language in this music video so what MTV done, was edit out the track, to miss out  all the bad language

The Things that get censored in music videos:
  1. ·         Violence
  2. ·         Graphical representation & realism
  3. ·         Animal cruelty
  4. ·         Discrimination
  5. ·         Political  views

The difference between banned and censored

Censored
·         when things get censored this means that the artist of this music video has to change, a certain part of the music video for it to get shown on live TV, sometimes they might have to remove a shot, because it’s not safe for the audience to be seen this can cause of the lyrics which an artist has said, or the something that has been seen in the music video which is harmful to the public.

Banned
·         When things get banned it means that this music video would get removed from live TV due to  explicit visual or lyrics, which have been said or seen in a music video  this is usually done to protect the audience  of any harmful material.
here is a website to show music videos which have bin banned or censored over the years http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/10-banned-music-videos-20130509

The advantages and disadvantages of censoring music videos:

Advantages
  1. ·         Protecting the public
  2. ·         Keeps the industry clean
  3. ·         Promotes political awareness

Disadvantages
  1. ·         Changes the meaning of the song
  2. ·         The artist is creatively restricted
  3. ·         Freedom of speech
  4. ·         Controls the audience

Conclusion

With this post which I have done on censorship this shows me that I need to be careful, the reason being is so people can get the right massage through , this is why I need to pick a song which is clean, with no explicit lyrics so I can be more creative.

  1. Trey, some good analysis here. You look at some of the elements that are censored and discuss the difference between cut and banned.

    To improve;
=Snoops song went from 'wet' to 'sweat'
-bullet point all things that get censored, even if you don’t provide examples of them
-was it the BBC that censored Duran Duran's video?
-analyse a video identifying the offences like we did with Eminem in class
