Planning; Analysing 3 music videos similar to my own idea

Analysing existing music videos from similar genres is a benefical process  because we can see how the artist and the characters are represented in their music videos. This will allow us determine   the structure the music video has. This is helpful because we can see what inspires us to include in our music video.
Run -DMC It’s Like That

Analyses Star representation

·         No start representation in this  music video that we are looking for .

Analyse Location

·         urban underground location representing

·         empty space for dancing  to take place

·         Isolated areas

Iconography
·         Stereo
·         Analyse the Lighting
·         Spotlight of dancer in the middle
·         Shows other groups clothing
·         Facial expression of characters

Analyse costume:
·         Casual clothing
·         Urban clothing
·         Hoodies
·         Baggy clothes
·         Trainers

Analyse editing
·         Various jump cuts to show the different characters moves.
·         Fast pace editing to show  the reactions from the groups and the certain moves of characters
·         Shot reverse  to show reactions of character in the different groups
Disclosures music video "white noise "is a another excellent  example for our group to analyse. Disclosure are a band that creates house music. As we are looking to adopt the house genre, this is a good example to study.   There will most likely be features involved that we would want to include in our music video. I am particularly interested in their use of jump cuts, location and the use of low level lighting.
Star representation
·         The is no actual representation of the artist and the video focuses on the character.
Locations
·         Location of an abandoned building is a great area as we feel it is conventional to use an area similar to this to stage the dance battle in our video.
·         The background of the character walking pass a wall full of graffiti is another good piece of location because it shows that urban surroundings that we plan to use. We also intend to show various dancers dancing to the same graffiti background.
Costume
·         The characters costume do not have any real relevance to our ideas for our music video.
Iconography
·         The torches the character has whist he is dancing is a great touch, especially in the low level lit area of the abandoned area we plan to use.
Lighting
·         Low level lighting in the abandoned building is the main one we plan to use as it can illustrate a great effect along with the characters holding the lit torches.
·         Natural lighting is also another use of lighting we also plan to use in our music video.
Editing
·         The main use of editing we took from this video are the jump cuts. The artist uses these nearer the beginning of the video because we felt the subtle movement would really go well with our concept with the dancers .
This video has helped us develop ideas for our own production because it use conventions of house music that have the potential to make a great video and that some of their ideas we can incorporate to create a great video.

The last music video which is similar to my own idea
Artist: Groover Armada

Song title: Madder

Genre: Electronic Music

Video structure: performance and narrative based.

Video content: Party animal on his typical day out. Starts off with character in his bed. Wakes up to his alarm clock with two women either side of him. The first verse becomes very descriptive so in theory we would fool the lyrics E.g. ‘read the bread while I toast my pay check’,’ start jogging when I hit the pavement’, and ‘cops say stop cause I aren’t Caucasian’. Chorus is very repetitive so we would have a series of moving images with different locations and scenarios for example scene we could have him staggering from being drunk and another scene we could have him running from the police.

Advantages
  1. ·         The verse is very descriptive so it would be quite easy to get ideas on what to film
  2. ·        The genre is very unique and would look very professional if pulled off

Disadvantage
·         The song is very long at 5 minutes and 22 seconds so we would have to edit the song which means more work
  1. ·         The song is quite fast so it would be hard to lip sync
  2. ·         The transitions would be fast too so we would need a lot of footage

Conclusion
This has help developed ideas for are music video because we plan to use the concept of dance in our music videos. As a result, we plan to entertain the audience and make the audience  want to watch it more.

  1. Two great analysis here on music videos that have inspired you or will help develop your ideas for your own video. This will definitely be helpful to you when you plan yor own music video conevntions and ideas.

    To improve;
-The third example (Groove Armada) looks like an idea rather than a music video analysis, check you have included this information in the right place please
-state what elements you have taken from this music video research and how it has helped you make decisons about your own music video. You should look to comment on artist image and interaction, MES, cinematogrpahy, editing and the structure of the music video
